Upsetting

Upsetting forges additional wall thickness onto the ends of a tube, creating the machining stock and joint strength needed for threaded connections. Tubular Services performs upsetting in-house at McCarty and Bear Bayou using induction-heated Ajax upsetters.

Upset Configurations

  • External upset (EUE) — wall thickness increased on the outside of the tube
  • Internal upset (NUE/IU) — wall thickness increased on the inside
  • Internal-external upset — combined increase on both surfaces

Process Control

Induction heating provides rapid, uniform, and repeatable temperature control at the tube ends — eliminating the variability associated with gas-fired forging. Our process specifications and operator training programs are documented under our quality management system, and every upset is visually inspected for wrinkles, underfill, and punch scoring before moving downstream.

Heat Treating

Heat treatment alters the mechanical properties of OCTG to meet the strength, hardness, and toughness specifications required for the application. Tubular Services performs both normalizing and quench-and-tempering in-house at McCarty and Bear Bayou, using induction heating throughout for precise, repeatable, and inspectable thermal control.

Normalizing

Size range: tubing & casing. Refines grain structure, relieves internal stresses, and produces uniform mechanical properties across the length of the tube. The pipe is heated to fully transform to austenite, then air-cooled — yielding a more uniform microstructure with higher strength than annealed steel and improved machinability for downstream operations.

Quench & Tempering

Size range: tubing & casing up to 10¾″ OD. Produces the higher-strength microstructures required for casing applications in demanding wells. The pipe is austenitized, rapidly quenched in water to form martensite, then tempered to relieve quench stresses and develop the final balance of hardness, strength, and toughness.

Our induction quench lines are designed for tight control of heating rate, hold time, quench rate, and tempering temperature — the four variables that determine final mechanical properties.

Inspection

Our tubing and casing inspections are performed by Arctic Pipe Inspection, who has provided services to the oil and gas industry since 1990. They have multiple inspection units strategically located at our Bear Bayou and McCarty facilities. Their services include electromagnetic, ultrasonic and weld line testing.

Hydrostatic Testing

Hydrostatic testing verifies the strength and leak integrity of every joint of pipe before it leaves our plants. Tubular Services performs hydro testing at both McCarty and Bear Bayou, with size capability matching our threading ranges so testing follows finishing in a single facility.

Process & Escalation

Test pressures are determined by API specifications for the pipe grade, wall thickness, and end use. If a joint fails to hold pressure, both the customer and the original mill source are notified — and the failure is documented and traced through our quality management system. No joint that fails hydro testing is shipped.
